How to Estimate Wood Fence Materials
A typical wood privacy fence consists of vertical posts set in concrete, horizontal rails spanning between the posts, and vertical pickets nailed to the rails. Getting the quantities right prevents return trips to the lumber yard.
Formula Breakdown
Our material estimator uses the following standard wood fence construction rules:
- Structural Posts: Calculated as `Length / Spacing`, rounded up, plus 1 extra post to close the final corner section. Posts must be buried at least 1/3 of their length in concrete.
- Horizontal Rails: Heavy horizontal 2x4 rails support pickets. 6-foot privacy fences require 3 rails (top, middle, bottom) to prevent picket warping over time. Decorator 4-foot fences only require 2 rails.
- Pickets: Divide the total length in inches by the width of the picket plus your desired gap spacing. For a privacy fence, picket spacing is 0. Standard pickets are nominal 1x6 (which measures 5.5 inches wide).
Frequently Asked Questions
As a rule of thumb, fence posts should be buried at least **1/3 to 1/2 of the above-ground height**. For a standard 6-foot fence, posts should go 2.5 to 3 feet deep into the ground and be secured with concrete.
A standard post hole requires approximately **1.5 to 2 bags (80 lb size)** of concrete mix. You can estimate this using our Concrete Calculator linked below.
