How to Calculate Deck Boards
Before purchasing wood or composite deck boards, calculating the required quantity avoids costly return fees. The calculation depends on your deck size, board width, gap spacing, and installation direction.
Nominal vs. Actual Board Sizes
Lumber uses "nominal" naming (what it is called before dressing/planing) and "actual" dimensions:
- 5/4x6 Decking: Measures exactly **5.5 inches wide** and 1 inch thick.
- 2x6 Framing/Decking: Measures exactly **5.5 inches wide** and 1.5 inches thick.
- 2x4 Trim/Decking: Measures exactly **3.5 inches wide** and 1.5 inches thick.
Calculating with gaps
A gap is required between boards to allow rainwater to drain and wet wood to expand. A standard **1/4-inch gap** is recommended for wood boards. Over a 16-foot deck width, these small 1/4-inch gaps add up, reducing the total board count significantly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Laying boards at a 45-degree angle requires cutting the ends of every board to match the perimeter rim joists, generating more triangular waste scraps. A diagonal installation requires a **15% waste buffer** compared to 10% for straight layouts.
Choose a length that matches or exceeds your deck dimensions to avoid board seams. For example, if your deck is 16 feet wide, buying 16-foot boards allows you to run single continuous pieces across the frame with zero joins.
